Of course, the best spots to go fishing in Ashe County are along the New River and its numerous tributaries. Both the South Fork and the North Fork of the New River are well stocked waters, and in Ashe County they combine to form the larger, New River that continues to flow into Virginia and West Virginia. Here one can catch a variety of native fish like walleye, muskellunge, bluegill, and a variety of trout and bass.

Venture out to the Blue Ridge Parkway and you’ll find great fishing streams at the Basin Cove Creek complex, between mileposts 238 and 244. This area is well stocked with rainbow and brook trout and contains some beautiful, scenic landscapes.

Three Top Creek and Big Laurel Creek are near the Three Top Mountain game land region, an area maintained by the Nature Conservancy, and are some great streams to fish. Surrounded by the 2,808 acres of pristine, NC Mountain Land at the game area, this region is a wonderful place to fish in private.
