The New River

The New River
The New River is formed in Ashe County at the confluence of the South Fork river, which flows from Boone NC, and the North Fork river, which flows from the northern Watauga County region, and is a tributary of the Kanawha River. For approximately 320 miles, the New River’s calm waters wind through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, and in Ashe County one can find some truly spectacular North Carolina mountain land for sale on the New River. Let our knowledgeable Ashe County Real Estate agents help you find North Carolina Mountain property along the beautiful, and ancient New River.

Named in 1651 by English cartographer, the New River was first discovered by fur trading colonists, however scientists believe humans interacted along the New River more than 10,000 years ago, after archeologists found arrowheads, tools, and tribal pottery. The Cherokee, Shawnee, and Creek tribe American Indians used the New River Valley around Ashe County as a hunting camp site as various camps and rock shelters have been found throughout the region.

Today the New River NC is an American Heritage River, and considered to possibly be the second oldest river in the world. Many geologists believe that the New River could be between 10 million and 360 million years old because the river’s waters flow against the topology of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, a trait that none of the other major rivers in the region share. It is believed that the New River pre-existed the formation of the mountainous terrain in the Southern Appalachians, however this is almost impossible to scientifically determine for certain as researchers do not necessarily agree on how to go about actually dating a river.

The New River provides Ashe County with endless activities to enjoy! Fishing is not the only fun thing to do on the New River, canoeing, tubing, kayaking and white water rafting are also popular outdoor activities to enjoy on the New River. In North Carolina the river’s waters are calm enough to peacefully canoe, however during the Spring in certain regions of the New River near the Virginia state line are the perfect places to raft, and several commercial white water guides offer rafting Class II-IV rapids on the New River.

New River State Park is located in Ashe County near Jefferson and is open year round. Here one can canoe, camp, fish, hike or enjoy a delightful picnic. Inexperienced paddlers will love the New River nature canoe trail, as it is gentle and flows along shallow waters, and anglers will enjoy the well stocked trout waters located throughout the park.
