Ashe County is home to both the New River State Park and Mount Jefferson State Park, and both are excellent places to enjoy NC hiking. The New River State Park has a few hiking trails, but canoeing and fishing are more popular activities at this park. There are several great trails at Mount Jefferson state park that will take you all the way to the summit of Mount Jefferson, which sits at an elevation of 4,665 feet and rises 1,600 feet above the towns of Jefferson and West Jefferson. If you hike to the top, you’ll be able to see endless views that span over Ashe County NC to regions in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee and Virginia.

For more hiking, explore the trails throughout the Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds throughout various parts of Ashe County. NC hiking trails like the Jumping off Rocks trail, Thompkins Knob Trail and the Lump Trail are easy and quick trails to hike and are all well-marked and easily found along the parkway.
