Jefferson is Ashe County’s seat and most populated town, and its “sister” community, West Jefferson, is Ashe County’s most famous town, containing the county’s historic downtown area. Lansing is one of Ashe County’s most historic regions and was a thriving community as the Norfolk and Western Railroad crossed through the town and an iron mine brought a small boom to the town in the early 1930’s. However, in the mid 1930’s an early morning fire nearly destroyed the entire town. Today the area is home to the Greater Lansing Area Festival which is held in September, and many of Ashe County’s residents live in the Lansing region as there is an abundance of NC mountain land for sale here.
