Ashe County Arts & Culture
Ashe County is an area in the Blue Ridge NC Mountains that thrives on sustaining the Appalachian arts and culture throughout the region. As such, there is plenty to see and do around Ashe County if you enjoy the arts. Here one can enjoy mountain bluegrass music, fine art galleries, and unique, theatre performances. Residents and seasonal visitors love the rich mountain heritage you can find here, and many locals are renowned storytellers, artists, and
craftsmen. On this page we’ve tried to provide a little information on some of the interesting places to visit for great arts and cultural experiences.
Wanting to hear some awesome live music? Head on over the Mountain Music Jamboree or Todd General Store, where you can enjoy some great traditional mountain music and bluegrass typically every Friday night during the warmer months. Todd General Store also regularly hosts storytelling nights with local, renowned storyteller Orville Hicks. These sessions are always a favorite, and vacationers even like to stop in to hear a mountain tale or two.
If you like fine art, stroll through the West Jefferson’s arts district and you’ll find several art galleries that display art in a variety of different mediums. Some of the most renowned artists live in and own galleries in Ashe County, so be sure to check out the galleries throughout the county, and not only in the downtown arts district region.
The Churches of the Frescoes are one of Ashe County’s most famous attractions. Painted by Ben Long and a team of artists, the Churches of the Frescoes beautiful murals are displayed in two historic, area churches. Stop by St. Mary’s Episcopal and Holy Trinity Episcopal to see
fresco murals “Mystery of Faith”, “John the Baptist”, and “Mary, Great with Child”.
If you like the theatre, and enjoy performing artists, there are a few stage companies in the region that offer wonderful shows and performances year round. Many times these groups perform at the Ashe Arts Center or Ashe Civic Center. Travel just a short distance to Blowing Rock NC and you can enjoy shows performed by the Blowing Rock Stage Company at the newly constructed Miriam & Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center. Also nearby, in Boone is Appalachian State University, which hosts a variety of performers and artists year round, as well as bringing a wide array of acts during their Appalachian Summer Festival.
