Ashe County is filled with historical landmarks.  Whether it be the town of Todd, Lansing, West Jefferson, or the Museum of Ashe County History, each has a story of its own.

The small town of Todd has been recognized on the National Register of Hstoric Places since 2000.  The New River, the Todd General Store, and the Virginia Creeper are all part of the town's history.  Todd was the end of the line for Norfolk & Western Railroad's Virginia Creeper train and the site where the train turned around for its trip back through the county toward Abingdon, Va., its starting point.  The train ran from 1915 to 1977.

Lansing still flourishes even after the Virginia Creeper ceased operation in the area.  The Lansing Volunteer Fire Department routinely holds special events to celebrate inside the community.

The Town of West Jefferson was also once a bustling railroad town as it was one of the major stops for the Virginia Creeper.  In fact, most say the train was the primary reason for the creation of the town.  After the railroad disappeared, West Jefferson began to rely on tourism  to stimulate its economy.  The town has several unique features, including the only cheese plant in the state of NC as well as different seasonal events through the year.  The Ashe County Farmers Market is held on the Backstreet in West Jefferson each Saturday for nearly the entire year.   West Jefferson is also home to the annual Holiday Parade that is held each November.  Christmas in July is the annual Independence Day celebration in the town.  Vendors from all over come and sell their food, crafts, and much more.  Patrons are also entertained with bands playing all day and music of all types.
